BigBear.ai Builds Prescriptive Analytics Module to Support Surgical Scheduling

BigBear.ai’s FutureFlow RX® platform will improve inpatient access to care by optimizing surgery schedules based on operating room/facility capacity and resource availability

Columbia, Md. – June 6, 2023 – BigBear.ai (NYSE: BBAI), a leader in providing AI-powered decision intelligence solutions, today announced it is working to optimize surgical scheduling and improve access to patient care at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Namely, BigBear.ai’s FutureFlow RX® patient flow platform will enable prescriptive analytics and discrete event simulation to help clients plan and manage the scheduling of inpatient procedures based on operating room, hospital capacity, and resource availability.

Children’s Hospital Colorado has engaged BigBear.ai to develop a new Operating Room (OR) Module within FutureFlow Rx®.

“At Children’s Hospital Colorado, we have been leveraging predictive models to augment and expedite decisions around staffing requirements, patient assignments, and other critical areas of hospital operations. We recognized that there is an impact on census dependent on surgical admissions. Using AI is imperative to our success in load leveling and maximizing resources. Looking ahead, we are excited to drive new innovations in how we model our surgery operations and prescribe the best steps forward to support our young patients,” said Kerri Webster, Vice President, and Chief Analytics Officer at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

The OR Module will be able to define and recommend schedules according to surgical procedure trends, hospital capacity, resource availability, and surgeon-specific supporting metrics. It will also provide prescriptive insights to optimize case scheduling based on the time of each surgery, procedure duration, and turnover time between cases. In addition, the new module will deliver real-time day of surgery prioritization based on staffing, equipment, instrumentation, and patient flow to maximize OR utilization and efficiency.

“Children’s Hospital Colorado is highly sophisticated in its understanding and application of prescriptive analytics within hospital operations, being the first children’s hospital to achieve Stage 7—the highest level on HIMSS Analytics Adoption Model for Analytics Maturity,” said Mandy Long, CEO at BigBear.ai. “Since we first partnered with Kerri and her team to deliver FutureFlow RX® inpatient capabilities in 2019, they have exemplified the transformative impact that data and predictive models can make on hospital workflows and the quality of patient care. We are excited to play a part in Children’s Hospital Colorado’s plans to drive new efficiencies across its operating rooms and provide patients with the treatments they have been waiting to receive and need.”
